What is Love?

And now the ear worm is in your head, right? But is it Haddaway or Howard Jones?

Seriously though, we write about romantic love and for each story there are the classic clichès of what love is(or at least some feeling of the state of being):

Tingling electricity that sparks when touched. CreationOfAdamLong

Butterflies in the belly. An all-encompassing need to have. To take. To possess. To cherish.

To honor.

To protect.

Is this love?

How about respect? Partnership? Honoring your partner’s opinions when they are not your own?

Is love a one of a kind event- never to be shared with another again? Or can you love many in your lifetime?

Can you grow to love a stranger because you were matched with him or her? Is there love at first sight?

How does one fall out of love? Is love only for those that deserve it, or can one who has no morals love?

Blinded by love. Fallen into love. So in love. Love bug. Sick with love. All you need is love.

I love you.

So many times the word love is thrown out there. But really…. WHAT IS LOVE?

Can it be proven by science? By logical explanation?

Is it different for you than for me? Is a man’s perception of what love is different from a woman’s? Does love get better with age, or is it more consuming when you are younger?

This post is intended not to answer- but to simply expound on love. Different from all of us- similar in so many ways too.

And it seems that we can go on and on in chapter/verse/novel as to what love can be.

You know when when you feel it. But do you really?

Love is that emotion that we will continue to ponder on, expound on, write songs/sonnets/novels about.

Because it is one thing that ties us all together.

As humans.

As compassionate beings.

Good. Bad. And in between.

There is always love. In all its shapes and styles.

Love is….love.

Bueller? Bueller?

6Hello My friends!

I feel like this post needs to be very 80’s-centric: lately I have been feeling like many of my teenage icons with their angst and insurmountable turmoils- all done up in pink and fluffy hair and bad boys. You may have wondered where I had gotten off to. I can tell you it was a lot less of this:5d50b6ec-ab9a-4bf2-8831-0da38670f8a8 and a lot more like this:

Every day my deadline has drawn near, I feel a little more like screaming in terror and fleeing. So much keeps getting in the way that by the end of the day when I sit down to open up that document- I simply sit there and stare:

The truth is I have been writing a lot. A lot of proposals for my day job that have left me feeling a little less creative in the fiction department and more or less structural in the requests for money, acquisitions, and phasing of implementations (I have toyed with the idea of adding juicy word emphasizers to these rather dry documents, but the opportunity to use expressive words like undulate, quiver, and firmness only go so far when talking about equipment, and that’s not the equipment I am proposing, sad to say). Sometimes- having to have a real job that pays the bills and provides benefits can take a lot out of you.

So where am I at then, you ask? Everybody has a hard time juggling life and work and everything else. So what’s the story, Jenny?

Well I am crawling back out of my cave of self woe to say I am back to writing, and determined to finish what I started, I will make this happen. I even have his serious face to prove it:

And to help that along- I thought a little excerpt was in order- since so many of you have been waiting patiently for that August publishing date that came and went. I am shooting for a November release of Finding Love, and really want you all to know that instead of simply throwing something together that I was not happy with, I wanted to spend the time to get my head on straight, out of dry, and lifeless proposals and collegiate writings, and back into what we love most- love. Simple, honest, heartfelt love.

So without further ado- how about a little bit of Benjamin?

His palms were sweating. How long had it been since he had sweaty palms?

She held out the glass with a tentative smile that trembled around the corners, perhaps fighting to fall if he didn’t move quickly enough. He reached for the slick glass, thanking the cool beverage that hid the moisture on his own fingertips and nodded to Judith in appreciation.

Swallow and then speak, he thought, fighting the urge to simply guzzle the lemonade to get the moment over with so he could flee.

“You have quite a dedicated community,Bishop Yoder,” she said, her voice so soft it was difficult to hear over the milling of people around them.

He looked around and noticed just how many of his parishioners had come today, smiling at the accomplishment in such a short time.

“They must truly enjoy your guidance and wisdom.”

He coughed and blushed at her compliment, sure that it had less to do with himself and more to do with the tradition his father had developed over his years as Bishop.

“Your Bishop has seen to providing as well. It is always a joy to see so many new faces here. I look forward to getting to know our neighbors better,” he replied and drank deeply once more, trying to deflect some of the admiration he saw shining in her dark eyes. He needed to finish his drink and run. Her smile had grown a little bolder and he knew he couldn’t linger.

False hopes led to broken hearts.

He knew that well.

“Well, I need to make my rounds,” he said and swallowed a little too quickly, forcing him to cough and splutter up the last of the tart beverage. He could barely croak out a thanks before he was shoving the glass into her hands and grabbing the first available work apron on the stool nearest them so he had an excuse to hide in the rafters with his friend, Nathan.

A quick glance back made his heart heavy. Judith stood there in the middle of the driveway, eyes to the ground as she slowly kicked at the gravel there.

He hadn’t meant to hurt her feelings. In truth, he had found her constant appearances with a beverage or slice of cake endearing, all the while as she fidgeted with her hands and blushed when he smiled and thanked her. And her tremulous smiles…

When was the last time he had had a young woman look at him that way?

Hadn’t he just been thinking as he rode to his best friend’s house how much he wished he could find a woman to find such joy in as Nathan had?

The scowl from Elder Snyder reminded him of the reason he could not pursue Judith Snyder.

He might be Bishop, but Benjamin Yoder had a past that many would not approve of.

It would take a strong woman to understand his past and convince her family that Benjamin Yoder was a worthy husband.

Another quick glance at Judith, and she smiled at having caught his failed attempt at sneaking a look at her.

Perhaps she wasn’t as meek as she seemed.

With a father like old Jeb Snyder, perhaps Judith was strong enough to handle Benjamin Yoder’s past failings.

That’s all for now! I am hoping to write a little bit for the blog every weekend to keep everyone up to date, maybe even provide some sneaks too! Hang in there my friends, I may have fallen off the horse- but we’re back in the saddle again!Can-t-Buy-Me-Love-caps-patrick-dempsey-7134093-720-528

Release Day for Sydney Logan’s: Soldier On

Hello everyone! I am so excited to share with you a story just released by the amazing Sydney Logan! I love Sydney’s writing style, as it is always sweet with some bittersweet moments that leave you really thinking about life and the human element. Her protagonists have issues- ones we can relate to, and you go into reading with the fervor to see your newest fiction friends make it to the happily ever after through everything that can be thrown at them. Nothing too angst-ridden- just honest. Real. 10151379_523200807788244_8207881945564334711_n

Soldier On is a wonderful journey for two young people who think they have their lives all figured out- and come to realize that life has a way of switching things up and testing your heart. Life will challenge your beliefs, your determination, and test your dedication.

When asked to read an Advance for Sydney Logan– a story about a modern day soldier and a complicated love story to boot– I was nervous to read based on some of my own past. Loving and losing the man you love to war is too close to my heart to usually allow me to even venture into a story about young soldier love.
But I love Sydney and everything she writes, because she writes what’s in the heart; her characters are always like one’s best friends while reading. So taking the advice of her title and her hero- I soldiered on and read this in one sitting.
And cried. Cried and laughed. Cried some more, and grinned like an idiot until my cheeks hurt. And even did a little happy, ugly crying to boot.
Brandon and Stephanie had plans for their last semester of college- and the future they had planned after graduation did not include a relationship. But a chance meet, that incredible feeling of a first kiss, and sweet chemistry changes that.
But Steph has some major hangups- like dating a soldier.
And Brandon’s a soldier.
Both have deeper stories that have shaped them- family histories that drive them to be who they are.
The love is clear. But with Steph’s issue about falling for a soldier, it’s a real test of their friendship, and their love.
Fear of being left behind, of losing the love you are desperately afraid to venture through with, of discovering that life isn’t perfect.
Because all you really need in life are three little things- Love, honesty, and respect- and as one of my favorite characters in the story says- you can’t have one without the others.
All this and more Ms. Logan covers with such ease, it truly is like riding the wave of emotions right beside every character.
So while I cried and ignored everything around me- I am left feeling content because this story was real. Close to home, but honest and respectful of not only our soldiers, but those that love them.

Grab a copy of Soldier On this weekend from June 20-22 for just 99 cents! And then enjoy a great read!

the blurb

10151379_523200807788244_8207881945564334711_n Losing her father in Desert Storm has left Stephanie James a bitter soul when it comes to the military. As a college senior juggling a full course load, Steph’s only goal is to graduate with honors at the end of the semester. She’s focused, determined, and a firm believer in all work and no play. Then she meets Brandon at a New Year’s Eve costume party. Despite his disguise, Steph finds herself attracted to the camouflaged soldier who curls her toes with a scorching midnight kiss.

Brandon Walker is an engineering major and ROTC student from the hills of Kentucky. Growing up as the son of a major general has given Brandon firsthand knowledge of the struggles military families sometimes face. Now that his father’s memory is fading, Brandon is even more determined to make his dad proud and graduate as an officer in the United States Army. Then he meets Stephanie, and suddenly, his focus is less on his military service and more on the pretty brunette who has stolen his heart. When he becomes aware of Steph’s resentment toward the military, he worries their relationship is doomed.

When faced with the realization that she’s fallen in love with a soldier, can Steph’s wounds from the past be healed with love in her present … and in her future?

Laura Kaye’s Hard As You Can Release

LKRDLGreeting, my friends!

As many of you are aware- I have a few favorite authors who I will drop everything and read whatever they have to offer- be it their grocery list, a tease of something they are working on, or their newest release in a series. Laura Kaye is one of those authors ( And as Laura shares a mutual love for Ben and Jerry’s- I KNOW her grocery list is Best-Selling!).

Laura’s newest release, Hard As You Can is the second novel in the Hard Ink Series- oh how I love former military men with a mission to correct the wrongs in the world! With ink! And attitude! Hard As You Can continues the action-packed story of five former Special Forces warriors- looking for the answers to their betrayal and dishonorable discharge. Shane McCallan takes front and center in this novel- out to fix the wrongs of those in need, namely, Crystal Dean. Crystal is struggling to get away from the seedy life she’s found herself stuck in due to family obligations and the underworld criminal bosses in Baltimore. When she bumps into Shane while on a secret rescue mission, the down on her luck waitress doesn’t realize she has just met her knight in shining armor.

Shane is just that: duty-bound, honorable, rough around the edges that makes any woman swoon, and capable of looking after the girl who’s caught his eye.

I just love Laura’s characters- every time I settle into one of her books, I know I will fall in love with every character she weaves. It is so true for this series. If you haven’t already read Hard As It Gets, the first in this series- RUN and grab it up. You will be so excited to have the sequel right there waiting!

HardAsYouCan Cvr Final

Hard As You Can releases today and I am so happy to be a part of the Blog Blitz to celebrate Laura’s success with this series.

Now how about a tease to get you in the mood for a little Hard Ink?

A word and Excerpt from Laura Kaye:

It’s release day! And I’m so excited to share Hard As You Can, the second book in the Hard Ink series, with all of you here today! Hard As You Can follows the surviving members of a disgraced Army Special Forces team as they fight to regain their stolen honor, and finds their investigation crossing paths with a waitress willing to do whatever it takes to stay alive and protect her younger sister. For Shane McCallan, saving Crystal Dean is a mission he refuses to turn down.

Today, I’ve got a super sexy scene to share with you, one that was a total surprise to me as I was writing it! I hope you enjoy this peek at the first time Shane and Crystal find themselves alone with each other:

“Do you like to dance, Crystal?” Shane asked in a low voice.

 “Uh, what? Why?”

His smile was crooked, playful. “ ’Cause dancing’s something people do when they’re getting to know each other.”

“Really?” Maybe where he was from. Then again, she worked in a strip club. Dancing was something people did to make money. So, okay, maybe her view of dancing was a bit jaded.

“Absolutely. Ask anybody.” The song faded away, followed by the announcement of a Southern rock station’s call sign. A new song started, and Shane turned to her with a smile. “Dance with me.”

Crystal peered up at him without the slightest idea how to respond. Because her body was saying hell, yes!, while her brain was screaming bad idea, really, really bad idea.

He stepped closer, arms raised, expression full of all kinds of invitation.

The next thing she knew, her right hand was in his and her left had slipped around his neck. Ohmigod, ohmigod, ohmigod, ran over and over in her mind. What am I doing? But then he tucked her hand against his chest and tugged her against him with the hand that settled at her lower back. And the closeness stole her breath.

He moved them to the beat of the song, a slow, sexy, bluesy number she didn’t know but would never forget. Some songs carried memories like the images were imprinted upon the very lyrics themselves, and she had no doubt this would be one of them.

All of a sudden, the air in the room felt ten degrees warmer. As they swayed to the beat, Shane’s body pressed against hers from thighs to chest. With every step and move and turn, Crystal’s breasts rubbed against the hard plane of his chest. Strong hands held and guided her body, making her want to feel them explore her everywhere. Arousal rose like a waking dragon inside her. Cautious. Curious. Dangerous.

This was wrong and stupid on so many levels. But, scary as it was, it felt so freaking good that she couldn’t force herself to pull away. One song. It’s just a dance. Just a dance just a dance just a dance.

And, holy crap, she wasn’t the only one aroused.

Against her belly, Shane hardened.

Crystal sucked in a breath, and he pressed his lips close to her ear. “We’re just dancing here. That’s all. I promise,” he said. But the adrenaline was already in her blood, setting her to a trembling she couldn’t control. Part curious interest and part instinctive fear. “Sshh,” he almost cooed. “Just dancing.”

The echo of her own thoughts from a moment before allowed her to draw a breath that almost calmed. They turned and swayed to the music, moving closer, pressing tighter, Shane’s lips so close to her face that she could feel his breath shudder across her cheekbone.

He was a fire she had no business playing with. She knew that even as she leaned her face against his . . . and got exactly what she’d hoped for.

He kissed her.

Just a brush of his lips against her cheek, but a kiss all the same.

And as much as it made her head spin, it was the little catch of breath in the back of his throat that sent a jolt of electricity down her spine to settle low in her belly. Light as a feather, he caressed her cheek, her temple, her ear with his lips. With him, always such gentleness, so different from almost every other sexual experience she’d ever had. It made her feel safe to allow this to continue.

Between them, his erection was firm, long, totally unyielding.

She shivered, caught between interest and fear, desire a river moving faster and faster inside her. The whole experience was a revelation—that her body had the capacity to respond this way, that a person existed who could pull these reactions from her.

For a moment, she gave herself over to the dizzying sensations. In her mind’s eye, she saw them undressing, fumbling their way back the hall, falling naked and wanting on the bed. What would it be like, just once, to take something that she wanted without worrying about anyone else, without being afraid? Just one wild, secret night, all for her? What would Shane be like?

So that’s Shane and Crystal for you! Did you have a favorite line? Thanks for reading!

“Edgy, sexy, and full of suspense! A great read from a great new author!”

~J.R. Ward on Hard As It Gets

About Hard As You Can:

Five dishonored soldiers.

Former Special Forces.

One last mission.

These are the men of Hard Ink.

Ever since hard-bodied, drop-dead-charming Shane McCallan strolled into the dance club where Crystal Dean works, he’s shown a knack for getting beneath her defenses. For her little sister’s sake, Crystal can’t get too close. Until her job and Shane’s mission intersect, and he reveals talents that go deeper than she could have guessed.

Shane would never turn his back on a friend in need, especially a former Special Forces teammate running a dangerous, off-the-books operation. Nor can he walk away from Crystal. The gorgeous waitress is hiding secrets she doesn’t want him to uncover. Too bad. He’s exactly the man she needs to protect her sister, her life, and her heart. All he has to do is convince her that when something feels this good, you hold on as hard as you can–and never let go.

Qwen Salsbury’s The Plan

Greetings my friends!

I am so excited to share with you the exciting new release of The Plan, by my good friend, Qwen Salsbury! This story is amazingly snarky, funny, hot, and unique in its styling. Written in the perspective of our heroine, Emma’s, daily journal- we discover her plight in her daily work life- wishing that she could simply be noticed by the gorgeous, yet very difficult Mr. Canon. Does she succeed? Can she invade his steely armor of anal retentive perfection? Can she make it through her duties as his assistant unscathed and triumphant?
And what is the reason for pineapples?
Well- you’ll just have to find out!
the blurb
For the last year, Emma has watched as Alaric Canon roll through personal assistants as each of them doesn’t measure up to his impossible standards. With his piercing eyes and the way that his suits fit his body, Emma decides she needs a plan to get noticed by the temperamental Mr. Canon. When her number comes up to be his PA, however, the plan goes awry and she is definitely noticed…not exactly how she had hoped.
“Emma! You have got to wake up.”
Canon is holding me, but I feel jostled. He’s been shaking me. I gulp down air.
“Shhh.” His hand smoothes my hair out of my face and down my back. Pulling back, he looks at me. “I thought…oh, God, I thought you were being…and I heard you, and I could see the lights, and then and then and th—oh, my God, what the motherfuck are you wearing?”
He propels himself backward from the bed.
This is all so weird. I look down and remember the pity party that ended in donning a peach negligee with black lace inlays and fabric that makes Clara’s sheer robe look like plaid flannel.
“This? This is actually lingerie.”
I told him he would know it if I wore it. I don’t do things halfway.
Deer in headlights. Yeah, that description works here.
And just to keep things straight, I’m sporting the headlights.
Maybe we could call them blips.
I may have just set off the radar…
There’s something about flustered Alaric Canon I can’t get enough of. I’m practically naked, yet he’s the one uncomfortable.
“Why? What did you expect me to wear?” I stand to usher him out…and show off the cute little coordinating panties. “Did you think I sleep in the nude?”
“Goodnight, Ms. Baker,” he calls behind him. He has already crossed the hall.
“And a goodnight to you, Mr. Canon.”

He let his lips move against mine with such ease; it was as if he had always known how to kiss me, that there had never been reservations.

couple-silhouette1Every kiss reaffirmed that we were made for one another. I felt his hands move along my back, drawing me closer as his kiss deepened. Having him pressed against me was the most amazing feeling ever, warm and safe. He sighed and broke off the kiss, burying his head into my shoulder as he held me tight. My fingers found their way to the nape of his neck, playing with his hair there. Nathan groaned and nuzzled a little deeper into my neck, the heat of his breath causing me to shiver.

“I cannot bear to let you go just yet,” he whispered. “I continue to count down the days until you will be mine wholly.”
