Sydney Logan’s Holiday Short Story- The Little Drummer Boy

It’s release day for Sydney Logan’s latest holiday short story, “The Little Drummer Boy!”

little drummer  the blurb     It’s Christmas Eve, and Justin Banks is on the hunt for a last-minute gift for his wife, Megan. With the help of a homeless man and the beat of a drum, Justin stumbles upon the one thing Megan has always wanted. The one thing money can’t buy.

It’s amazing what we can hear if we just take a moment and really listen.

Rum pum pum pum.

It’s faint, but it’s there. A quiet, rhythmic beat that blends into the night. How this old man heard the sound is beyond me.

“You hear it, don’t you?”

With a nod, I look around, hoping to find the source of the sound. The man points toward the coffee shop’s covered alleyway.

“Back there,” he says.

The carolers begin their rendition of “O Holy Night,” and once again, I hear the “rum pum pum pum” coming from the darkness.

Intrigued, I step away from the old man and walk slowly toward the alley. Each step brings me closer to the beat, until finally, I see a little boy, nestled in the corner. His only light comes from a lantern, and a snare drum rests in his lap. The drum is scarred and the strap is frayed, but it’s obviously his most prized possession.

Probably his only possession.

Does he live here? In this filthy alley? And where are his parents?

His clothes are dirty and ragged, and the faded blue jacket he wears is about three sizes too big.

“Shall I play for you?” he whispers.

A Fangirl’s Review of Laura Kaye’s HARD AS IT GETS

HARD AS IT GETS smaller release graphic

To say that I am a huge fan of Laura Kaye’s writing may be a bit of an understatement (puts away the Number #1 Foam Finger and settles in for a mature review). I have followed Laura’s career since the very beginning-waiting with bated breath for each novel she has written to be released; and with eager anticipation, enjoyed the news of every new series.

*sidebar* Laura- I promise to never ever go Annie Wilkes on you.

So imagine my excitement when I received my copy of HARD AS IT GETS at a writer’s conference this summer. She even signed it and suffered my furious blushing and stammering. She’s a reader’s joy when she talks with her adoring fans!

Imagine me if you will- scores of books piled up- ready for reading…

Decisions, decisions… whose novel do I leap at the first chance I get?

Pishah… Laura’s of course!

Let me preface this also with a plea in my defense. Forget for a minute that I love everything that Laura has ever penned:

Hot man- tattoos, a little camouflage and I’m done for. But wait! There’s more!

Because Nick Rixey isn’t just some former military dude with some tats… oh no. The man is former Special Ops (my personal kryptonite) He OWNS the Tattoo parlor our fine heroine finds him in,and has a troubled and tortured past. MERCY!

Add to that a sense of honor, duty, loyalty and commitment to service all wrapped up in a muscle car-driving, tatted up beauty of a man who has issues with coming to terms with his past? Count me in for this series!

Nick meets Becca Merritt (our stubborn and strong heroine) under strained terms. He has issues of blame towards her father, his former CO who Rixey feels is the reason he and his team were relieved of duty to forego a scandal, but something about Becca’s bright blue eyes and plea for his help nags at him. Enough to see him giving in to his stalwart wish to forget about his past and instead help her with something that may, in the end, help to clear his name and his team.

Becca is equal parts vulnerable and strong-willed. She can be as tough as her late father, the Colonel, but fragile and nurturing as a good tough man sometimes needs. And she needs a tough guy. When she discovers her brother, her only family member left alive, has gone missing with a cryptic note to search out Rixey, she is left with few options. And upon meeting Rixey, who’d want to ever leave his side?

The chemistry between the two is scorching. Laura never disappoints her readers in the HOT and STEAMY department. These two sizzle on the pages. Their relationship and the mystery interwoven in the storyline is scintillating and intriguing. While this story could easily stand alone, I am so very excited for the rest of the series- to see how these two solve the mystery, clear their names, find resolution and perhaps (oh yes! oh please) we learn a lot more about the rest of the Special Ops team: Marz, Shane, Easy and Beckett ( OH MY!)

HARD AS IT GETS is available November 26th (that’s today! RUN don’t walk!) with the second book, HARD AS YOU CAN scheduled for February 25th, 2014- There’s four books in all (FANS SELF)

I give this book Five glorious stars- which is better than any four star General. This book is a must read and I can’t wait for the next three!

And just in case you need more to convince you- here’s a hot trailer with tattooed men and Laura Kaye herself:
